About Pownal, Maine

The town of Pownal is located in Cumberland County, Maine. In the 2010 census the population was 1, 474. The town was originally the northwest portion of Freeport and was first settled in 1680. It later became incorporated by the Massachusetts General Court in 1808 receiving its name from former Massachusetts Governor Thomas Pownal. Early industries included agriculture, a gristmill, and a carriage factory.
